Alumni from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will be recognized for their professional and community contributions during the LAS Honors and Awards Ceremony on Oct. 24, 2019 at the ISU Alumni Center. The private ceremony will honor alumni receiving departmental, college and Iowa State University Alumni Association (ISUAA) awards.

Jessica Kinser (’05 English and political science, M.P.A. ‘07) was selected as a recipient of the ISUAA Outstanding Young Alumni Award for excelling in her profession and providing service to her community. While she will be honored at the Oct. 24 event, she will receive her award at the ISUAA Honors and Awards ceremony on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019 at Iowa State University’s Scheman Building auditorium.

The following alumni were selected as recipients of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences awards, and will receive their awards during the Oct. 24 event:

Yoon-Shik Lee (M.A. ’82 Political Science) was selected to receive the LAS Citation of Merit, which recognizes distinguished alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and received national or international recognition.

Gordon M. Shepherd (’55 zoology) was selected to receive the John V. Atanasoff Discovery Award, which recognizes alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who have significantly advanced scientific knowledge through laboratory accomplishments and/or management.

Vanessa Baker-Latimer (M.P.A. ’89) was selected to receive the Carrie Chapman Catt Public Engagement Award, which recognizes alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who have demonstrated outstanding achievement for their work with public entities at the local, state, national or international levels.

Dennis A. Babcock (’70 speech communication) was selected for the LAS Dean’s Arts and Humanities Award, which recognizes alumni and friends of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who have enhanced appreciation of the arts and humanities at a local, state, national or international level.

Dianne Bystrom, director emerita of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics was selected to receive the LAS Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for outstanding service or academic contributions that have furthered the educational mission of the college.

The following alumni will be honored by some of the college’s individual departments, and will also receive their award at the Oct. 24 event:
Sue-Lein Wang (Ph.D. ’85 physical chemistry) was selected for the Chemistry Outstanding Alumni Award.

Gagan Chopra (’91 computer science, M.S. ‘93) was selected for the Computer Science Distinguished Alumni Award.

Jerome Fast (’85 meteorology and mathematics, M.S. ’87 earth science, Ph.D. ’90 meteorology) was selected for the Geological and Atmospheric Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award.

Eleanor Kahn (’08 architecture and performing arts) was selected for the Theatre Distinguished Alumni Award.

Adam McDonald (’05 music: piano performance) was selected for the Music Distinguished Alumni Award.

Kim Guthrie (’84 journalism and mass communication) was selected for the James W. Schwartz Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism and Communication.

William B. Johnson (Ph.D. ’69 mathematics) was selected for the Mathematics Distinguished Alumni Award.

Michael Krull (M.A. ’00 political science) was selected for the Political Science Alumni Achievement Award.

Laura E. Ortiz (’91 Spanish) was selected for the World Languages and Cultures Distinguished Alumni Award.

Jeffry D. Sander (’04 computer science, Ph.D. ’08 bioinformatics and computational biology) was selected for the Genetics, Development, and Cell Biology Distinguished Alumni Award.

Troy M. Schulte (’92 history, ’94 economics) was selected for the Economics and History Outstanding Alumni Award.
