Daniel Butler, assistant professor of sociology, has published “An Examination of the Influence of Exposure to Disciplinary Segregation on Recidivism” in the Aug. 13, 2019, online edition of the Crime & Delinquency Journal. His co-authors are Benjamin Steiner, University of Nebraska, Omaha; Matthew Makarios, University of Northern Iowa; and Lawrence Travis III, University of Cincinnati.
In this article, Butler and his research team examined data collected from offenders released to post-release supervision in Ohio to determine how various types of exposure to confinement in disciplinary segregation—and the timing of that confinement—influence the odds of recidivism. They determined that confinement in disciplinary segregation and the timing of that confinement result in increased odds of recidivism.
