Md Shahriar Mahmud, applied mathematics Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Mathematics, has been named to the first class of Simons Dissertation Fellows in Mathematics, an honor announced this July by the Simons Foundation.
This prestigious fellowship, established in memory of the foundation’s late co-founder Jim Simons, provides research support to exceptional graduate students in the final years of their doctoral studies. Each awardee receives $30,000 in research funding, along with $2,000 for their department, distributed over the fourth and fifth years of their Ph.D. journey. The program reflects Simons’ lifelong commitment to advancing mathematics and supporting the next generation of mathematical scientists.
Mahmud’s selection places him among just forty fellows nationwide, recognized for their outstanding promise and contributions to the field. His achievement highlights both the strength of his research in mathematical biology and the supportive environment for mathematical scholarship at Iowa State University.
