Undergraduate student leaders in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology will host the 19th annual Stupka Undergraduate Research Symposium on Thursday, April 3, in the Molecular Biology Building.

This student-organized symposium celebrates a variety of innovative undergraduate research conducted at Iowa State while offering opportunities for education and networking with alumni, industry leaders, and academic professionals.

This annual event was the inspiration of Robert John Stupka III, an undergraduate student majoring in biochemistry at Iowa State University. Rob believed in the power of research, allowing the extraordinary to be possible, and strived to connect students and faculty for the purpose of scientific investigation.

The symposium’s schedule includes breakfast, two poster sessions, lunch, special presentations from student, alumni, and keynote speakers; and dinner.

This year’s keynote speakers are Dr. Aadel A. Chaudhuri, associate professor and vice chair for translational research in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and Dr. Tessa Burch-Smith, associate member and principal investigator at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Stupka students mentor future scientists

In a new addition to this year’s symposium, six high school students from the Waukee Community School District’s APEX Program will also present posters, with Stupka student leaders providing feedback.
