Two members of the Iowa State University Department of Music and Theatre were recognized by the Ames Community Arts Council at their annual Arts Awards Celebration held at Stephens Auditorium on May 15, 2022.

Michael Golemo, director of bands and University Professor, received the 2022 Bill Pelz Arts Advocacy Award and Cason Murphy, assistant professor of theatre, received the 2022 Art Educator Award.

According to the Ames Community Arts Council, the Bill Pelz Arts Advocacy Award is given to a person who generates enthusiasm for Ames arts events by taking every opportunity to promote and encourage participation at any and all levels: as an audience member, as a performer or as a behind-the-scenes volunteer. Nominated by the Department of Music and Theatre, Golemo received the award for his tireless work to make Ames an artistic destination in central Iowa. He has conducted concerts with numerous ensembles, appeared in countless recitals and concerts, contributed original compositions to honor specific individuals or events, and has been responsible for bringing many world-class performers to Ames — all building a positive town and gown relationship between Ames and ISU during his time at the university.

The Art Educator Award is given to an educator in the greater Ames community who identifies, encourages, instructs, and promotes the arts (visual, dance, music, drama, and creative writing) in an exemplary manner. Nominated by the Department of Music and Theatre, Murphy received the award for a teaching style that demonstrates exceptional student engagement, connection and effectiveness. By creating learning environments in his classrooms and rehearsal rooms that encourage independent thinking, self-reflection, and problem-solving, Murphy teaches students both artistic and critical skills that they take with them throughout their adult lives.

Since 1976, the Ames Community Arts Council has gathered artists and supporters of the arts, non-profit organizations, and businesses in the greater Ames area who are dedicated to building a sense of community and helping artists succeed.
