Phi Beta Kappa initiates honored at May ceremony

During a May 1 ceremony, 112 Iowa State students with a major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) were initiated into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, Phi Beta Kappa recognizes students for outstanding academic achievement in a broad curriculum in the liberal arts and sciences. This year’s ceremony marked 50 years of Phi Beta Kappa initiation at Iowa State University.

Five LAS students also received special individual awards:

  • Daniel Buser, senior in physics, recipient of the Ruth and Clayton Swenson Award in the Sciences
  • Jessie Bustin, senior in data science, recipient of the Jean Day Lassila Award in the Liberal Arts for best undergraduate academic program
  • Feben Ruscitti, senior in anthropology, recipient of the Jerry Shakeshaft Phi Beta Kappa Award for Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Ashlan Simpson, senior in statistics, recipient of the Edward Allen Award in the Mathematical Disciplines
  • Emily Timmerman, senior in history, recipient of the Barbara Mack Award for Excellence in the Humanities and Social Sciences

112 LAS students were initiated into Phi Beta Kappa during a May 1, 2022 ceremony at Iowa State University.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University was granted its Phi Beta Kappa chapter charter in 1973.
