LAS, ISUAA honor alumni and friends

Alumni and friends of Iowa State University and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will be honored with awards from the Iowa State University Alumni Association and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Honors and Awards Ceremony Oct. 25, 2018 and a university ceremony on Oct. 26, 2018.
The Iowa State University Alumni Association will honor four alumni as well as the Iowa State University Cyclone Football Varsity Marching Band.
Shane Jacobson (communication studies ’03, MS education ’08) was selected as a recipient of the ISUAA Outstanding Young Alumni Award for excelling in his profession and providing service to his community.
David Kurns (’82 journalism and mass communication) was selected as a recipient of the ISUAA Alumni Service Award for exceptional leadership and service to ISU and LAS.
Deb Tharnish (English ‘77) was selected for the ISUAA 2018 Alumni Medal, the premier award given to alumni by the ISU Alumni Association, for long loyal service to the university through alumni-related activities.
ISU Bands Director Michael Golemo and the Iowa State University Cyclone Football Varsity Marching Band were selected for the ISUAA 2018 Impact Award for bringing broad recognition to the university and increasing the involvement of ISU constituents in the life of the university.
Lee Ann De Reus (political science ’86) was selected for the ISUAA 2018 Alumni Merit Award for outstanding humanitarian efforts that transcend purely professional accomplishments and bring honor to the university.
In addition, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences selected five alumni and friends for college distinction.
Maryl R. Johnson (zoology ‘73) was awarded the LAS Citation of Merit, which recognizes distinguished alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and received national or international recognition.
Dan Winters (journalism and mass communications ’03) was awarded the LAS Young Alumni Award, which recognizes an alumnus of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who is under 40 years of age and who has excelled professionally and provided service to the community.
Sharon Haselhoff (political science ’88) was selected for the Carrie Chapman Catt Public Engagement Award, which recognizes alumni of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who have demonstrated outstanding achievement for their work with public entities at the local, state, national or international levels.
Henry Ong (agricultural journalism and mass communication, ’78) was selected for the LAS Dean’s Arts and Humanities Award, which recognizes alumni and friends of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who have enhanced appreciation of the arts and humanities at a local, state, national or international level.
Arthur Slusark, chief communications officer for Meredith Corporation, was selected to receive the LAS Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for outstanding service or academic contributions that have furthered the educational mission of the college.
Adam Clark (meteorology ’03, M.S. meteorology ’06, Ph.D. meteorology ’09) will also receive his 2017 LAS Young Alumni Award on Oct. 26.
Charlie Hunt (computer science ’92) was selected for the Computer Science Distinguished Alumni Award.
Sean R. Stanek (computer science ’02) was selected for the Computer Science Young Alumni Award.
Joseph McPhail (economics and agricultural business ’06) was selected for the Economics Outstanding Young Alumni Award.
Andie Dominick (English ’94 and M.A. English ’97) was selected for the English Distinguished Alumni Award.
William F. (Bill) Tubbs (agricultural journalism ’71) was selected for the James W. Schwartz Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism and Communication.
Kira H. Barclay (mathematics ’03) was selected for the Mathematics Young Alumni Award.
Charity Nebbe (political science, English and biology ’97) was selected for the Political Science Alumni Achievement Award.
Ty Henderson (finance and international studies ’97) was selected for the World Languages and Cultures Distinguished Alumni Award.
