Jake Lovett, an alum of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, has achieved an extraordinary milestone by winning the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news. As a staff designer for The Minnesota Star Tribune, Lovett played a vital role in delivering powerful and compassionate visual storytelling during coverage of the tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis, where two children lost their lives and 28 others were wounded. His work, as part of the reporting team, demonstrates the profound impact thoughtful, ethical journalism can have during moments of intense community crisis.
“Journalism is at its best when the work is hardest. We are exceedingly proud of Jake and other Greenlee alumni who serve their communities with professionalism and sensitivity,” said Tracy Lucht, director of the Greenlee School. “To receive a Pulitzer Prize is the highest recognition in our field. While this story is tragic, the honor is well deserved.”
Lovett earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication from Iowa State University in 2012 and served as editor-in-chief of the Iowa State Daily. He is now an award-winning designer specializing in photo illustration and photo editing in daily news, sports and business coverage at The Minnesota Star Tribune.
