The American Council on Education (ACE) has announced that Monic Behnken, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) associate dean for strategic innovation at Iowa State University, has been named an ACE Fellow for academic year 2026-27. A total of 31 Fellows were selected this year following nominations by the senior administration of their institutions and a rigorous application process. Click here for a full list.

Established in 1965, the ACE Fellows Program is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing faculty and staff for senior positions in college and university administration. More than 2,500 higher education leaders have participated in the ACE Fellows Program over the decades, with close to 150 Fellows currently serving as presidents and provosts, and many more serving as senior administrators and deans.

“At a time of significant change across higher education, strong leadership has never been more important,” said ACE President Ted Mitchell. “As a result of the program, Fellows will be well positioned to navigate this evolving landscape, bringing fresh perspectives, practical experience, and a commitment to shaping the future of higher education.”

A first-generation college student, Behnken completed a joint J.D./Ph.D. program in clinical psychology and law, an experience that continues to shape her interdisciplinary and systems-oriented leadership approach. As associate dean, Behnken advances strategic initiatives that cross administrative portfolios to enhance faculty and student success and embed innovation into institutional practice. Her leadership approach integrates data-informed decision-making with a strong commitment to inclusive excellence, ensuring that innovation advances quality and access.

Behnken regularly champions initiatives that integrate technology, interdisciplinary design, and the connecting of academic programs with industry partners. Through these efforts, she is strengthening Iowa State’s ability to respond to workforce demands and broader societal challenges.

“I am honored to be selected to join the distinguished community of higher education leaders who have participated in the ACE Fellowship. This fellowship is widely regarded as a transformative turning point in a higher education leader’s career,” Behnken said. “I am deeply grateful for the investment and support of the Iowa State University Office of the President, the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost, and LAS Dean Benjamin Withers in making this opportunity possible.”

The ACE Fellows Program combines retreats, interactive learning opportunities, visits to campuses and other higher education-related organizations, and placement at another higher education institution to condense years of on-the-job experience and skills development into a single year.

During the placement, Fellows observe and work with the president and other senior officers at their host institution, attend decision-making meetings, and focus on issues of interest. At the conclusion of the fellowship year, Fellows return to their home institution with new knowledge and skills that contribute to capacity-building efforts, along with a network of colleagues across the country and abroad.
