Hugo Salgado awarded grant from the Foundation for Endangered Languages

Hugo Salgado, assistant professor in the Department: World Languages and Cultures, has been awarded a grant from the Foundation for Endangered Languages (FEL) to support Nawat Story Circles, a community-based language revitalization initiative in Santo Domingo de Guzmán (Witzapan), El Salvador. The project builds on Dr. Salgado’s audiovisual repository Ini Tay Tinat “This Is What We Say” and will bring together Nawat-speaking elders, teachers, and community members for immersive Story Circle workshops centered on traditional narratives, songs, and cultural knowledge. The grant will fund teacher training, curated teaching materials, and the distribution of USB drives containing audiovisual resources, strengthening local capacity for intergenerational transmission of El Salvador’s critically endangered Indigenous language.
