Ritwik Banerji publishes in Oxford University Press

Ritwik Banerji, assistant professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures, recently published a chapter in the edited volume “Making Music Together,” recently released by Oxford University Press. The chapter, titled “Silence in Free Improvisation,” draws on linguistic pragmatics in order to understand the meaning of a player’s silence in musical improvisation using an experimental ethnographic method Banerji has developed in which human musicians play with an AI improviser and critique its playing.
