Lindsay Preseau, assistant professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures, recently published a journal article titled, “Teaching Gender-Just Language in the Era of ‘Divisive Concepts“. Recent years have seen a surge in scholarship on queer pedagogies in language classrooms. At the same time, “divisive concepts” laws — including proposed legislation in Iowa to ban the teaching of gender-inclusive language for grammatically gendered languages — are increasingly restricting U.S. educators.
